DIN and Disorder
Personal Project, 2020/2025
License plates with german standards.
This bricolage series uses dissected German license plates: letters, numbers, Euro and D symbols, reassembled with precision onto OSB board. Excessive screws exaggerate function into pattern, transforming mechanical attachment into visual rhythm.
The resulting compositions blend symmetrical order, ironic phrases, and playful irregularities, reflecting on Germany’s rigid social structure (with exceptions), German Standards (DIN), and its deep cultural identification with the car. Each art piece can be viewed normal by day, and highly reflective at night.
Role:
Concept, production, documentation
Part of an ongoing exploration, this work builds on my interest in systems, repetition, and language. Influenced by dyslexia, I perceive letters as visual forms—shapes first and meaning second, where language dissolves into structure and rhythm.
Before cutting the plates, I documented every available letter, number, and symbol. While mass-produced, each plate had slight variations, and character quantities weren’t uniform. To work within these constraints, I designed all compositions digitally in advance, ensuring accuracy and efficient use of materials.
