my biggest artistic inspirations
“My Gods” is an ongoing project, depicting my biggest artistic inspirations as western gods or holy people.
I consider myself an atheist and I understand that this may be a religiously controversial work for some people; I ask you to look at this while taking artistic freedom into consideration. Thank you.
I was raised Catholic
In Germany children receive a lot of religious education, which incidentally is a great asset in art, and I could recognize saints in paintings before I even went to school. I was raised Catholic, so I chose to go with western figures and all individuals are portrayed in a manner relevant to their persona – Wolfgang Beltracchi on an old unfinished canvas, Kanye, with his multiple personalities on a b/w multiply printed screen print, Steve Jobs on an old iMac, and Tom Sachs as a marker drawing on paper, ready to be finished on plywood, in his distinctive style.
To fully illustrate the concept of this project I asked a photographer friend Imad El Rayess to shoot me with my inspirations.
